Should you rekey your locks or replace them? Both stop your old keys from working — here's how to pick the right one and not overspend.
Rekeying — same lock, new key
Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing lock so it works with a brand-new key, and the old keys stop working. It's cheaper and faster than replacing, and it's the right call whenever the lock itself is in good condition. Common reasons: you've just moved in and don't know who has keys, keys were lost or stolen, a tenancy or flatmate changed, or a relationship ended. Rekeying starts from $60 + GST per lock.
Replacing — new hardware
Replacement makes sense when the lock is worn, sticking, corroded (common near the coast), physically damaged, or simply outdated. It's also the way to go if you want a security upgrade — a proper deadbolt, better door furniture, or a smart lock. You get new, reliable hardware rather than refreshing something on its way out.
Can I have one key for everything?
Yes. We can rekey multiple doors so they all open with a single key — far easier than juggling a bunch of keys for the front, back and garage. Ask us about keying alike while we're there.
Not sure? We'll tell you straight
If you're not certain which you need, that's fine — we'll look at your locks and tell you honestly whether a rekey will do or a replacement is the smarter spend. Read more about rekeying and repairs and replacement, or call 09 972 4640.
