Keys break when they're worn thin, bent, or forced in a lock that's binding. We remove the broken piece with extraction tools, usually without damaging the lock, then find out why it happened. A worn key gets replaced with a fresh cut; a lock that's binding gets cleaned, adjusted or replaced so it doesn't happen again.

Before we arrive
Don't push the broken piece back in or try to turn the lock with the other half of the key — that usually jams it deeper. If part of the key is sticking out, you can try gripping it with needle-nose pliers and pulling straight out, without twisting. If the door is locked and it's your only way in, tell us when you call.

- Will I need a new lock?
- Usually not. Most locks are fine once the broken piece is out. If the key broke because the lock is worn or binding, we'll show you and quote a repair or replacement.
